How to prevent injuries while working out

If you’re a total newbie to working out and you’re about to embark on your new fitness journey – welcome to the club! But, before you can tackle the adventures of HIIT, boxing and beyond, it’s important that you’re aware how exercise injuries can occur, in order to prevent them.

Now we totally get how excited you are to start smashing your fitness goals, but if you start working out without taking ANY preventative precautions, you could end up seriously injured, and out of the exercise game for a while.

Keep reading to learn how you can get to work without injury getting in the way of your goals.

WORK WITH A TRAINER OR COACH

If you’re starting a new routine, a personal trainer or coach will work with you on your health and fitness goals, with a routine totally tailored to your specific requirements. A trainer can help you use the correct form, give you specialised safety tips and guide you as you progress. If you’re unable to get a coach, group fitness classes are a great way to learn the ropes and get started.

WARM UP

We repeat… WARM UP… ALWAYS! It’s never a good idea to start exercising without warming up the muscles first, and cold muscles smf tight tendons are a recipe for injury. Warming up increases your body’s core temperature, increases blood flow, and stretches the muscles. Try dynamic stretching and walking, or work your muscles with light weights and resistance bands.

TAKE IT SLOW AND CROSS TRAIN

Sure, you’re pumped to start exercising, but jumping straight into hardcore weight training or pressuring yourself to run for an hour on the treadmill is not just unsustainable, but dangerous too. Start with moderate exercises of around 30 minutes around 3 times a week, and increase your intensity level as your fitness level starts to increase. After all, slow and steady wins the race! We also recommend giving your muscles a break by switching up your routine with different activities such as HIIT, walking, and resistance training.

INVEST IN YOUR ATTIRE

If you’ve had the same old pair of running shoes for years, it’s probably time for an upgrade! Head straight to a spore store where you can gain expert advice on what kind of training shoes will work best for you. They will consider your arch, gait and bodyweight, giving your body the support it needs whilst training. Inappropriate footwear can lead to pretty serious injuries, which means it’s time to get shopping!

FUEL YOUR BODY

Fuelling your body with water and nutritious foods is an incredibly important aspect to preventing you from burning out and injury. We’re not telling you to work out straight after a huge meal, but starving  your body of what it needs is a no-go. We recommend working with a nutritionist to guide you with the best foods you should eat in order to remain energised for your workouts!
